About Simon Greetham
"My artwork is a reflection of my own internal dichotomy. On the one hand, I'm drawn to the precision and logic of abstract geometric forms that allow me to exercise the rational and analytical side of my mind - I love the beauty of structured simplicity; the elegance of form and order.”
“On the other hand, I'm compelled to express the more intuitive and emotional aspects of my being through my minimalist figurative paintings. A practice where the rational gives way to freedom of expression. These works are a celebration of humanness in all its vulnerability and rawness.”
“The juxtaposition of these two practices reflects the balance within me—the logical, controlled side in dialogue with the spontaneous, emotional side. Through my work, I aim to reconcile these opposing forces, creating a visual language that is at once both harmonious and discordant.”
Artistic Journey
Simon’s painting process is a journey of self-discovery. “For me, painting is like a journey across an unknown land. An exploration, where I know what I hope to see. A journey where I can use the stars or whatever else to find my way, but one where only the general direction is known. Inevitably I take the wrong path sometimes or I discover I’m at a dead-end. It’s always a journey of learning regardless of whether there’s an immediate aesthetic pay-off”.
“I think the ‘journey’ analogy is useful in explaining the breadth of my work. What appears to the uninformed as tangential or unconnected to my recent work, for me seems perfectly logical. I see the thread; I understand the reason for the departure from the previous works. It’s part of the journey; eventually I re-join the road where I left off, and sometimes it allows me to re-join much further down the road”.
A word on quality
“I love painting; everything about it, from preparing a canvas, to stretching and framing it. Throughout the process, quality is forefront in my mind. I’m very lucky that as well as being an artist, I am a qualified picture framer so I get to control quality at every stage of production. Collector satisfaction is very important to me, and that is only achieved by attention detail in every step of the process”. Please feel free to contact me to discuss any aspect of my work.
